2001 Toyota Corolla Belt Noise and Oil Leak

by Lucas Schumm
(Columbus, Ohio USA)

In February 9, 2026 I brought my 2001 Toyota Corollla(automatic) in to shop to address a belt noise. The mechanic replaced the serpentine belt and also said the tensioner needed replaced. Both of them were replaced.

Upon getting the vehicle back there was still a noise that sounded like it might be a pulley but it sounded better than what it had been, so I left it alone.
On March 27, 2026 I was driving home from work when I noticed the sound sounded more pronounced and more aggressive. Within 10 minutes the engine started smoking and the power steering briefly went out too. Upon getting home, I noticed under the hood oil had been spraying out close to the serpentine belt. I quit driving the car and next day I tried to see what was going on again and when turning on the engine the sound was more aggressive and the serpentine belt came off. The oil level was low and there was a puddle underneath of oil as well.

Possible Cause

Hi Lucas,
First, thanks for building a page, it can really help other readers how have similar issues with their Toyota's.
It's difficult to diagnose your Toyota by the pictures but it looks to me like the upper alternator bolt was not completely tight and I'm not sure where the oil is coming from. I truly think that the mechanic didn't fix your vehicle the first time, and there should be some kind of warranty on workmanship.
Do you know where the oil was coming from? Just the oil spraying on the belt would cause a noise, smoking, and dislodging issue. Was the oil cap tight? Did you or are you planing on bringing it back to the mechanic who did the original work? Let me know.

Thanks,
Eddie
